The Name of the Star by Maureen Johnson

Genre:  YA Paranormal Fantasy
Shades of London, Book 1

Description (taken from Maureen Johnson's website ):
The day Louisiana teenager Rory Deveaux arrives in London marks a memorable occasion. For Rory, it’s the start of a new life at a London boarding school. But for many, this will be remembered as the day a series of brutal murders broke out across the city, gruesome crimes mimicking the horrific Jack the Ripper events of more than a century ago.

Soon “Rippermania” takes hold of modern-day London, and the police are left with few leads and no witnesses. Except one. Rory spotted the man police believe to be the prime suspect. But she is the only one who saw him. Even her roommate, who was walking with her at the time, didn’t notice the mysterious man. So why can only Rory see him? And more urgently, why has Rory become his next target? In this edge-of-your-seat thriller, full of suspense, humor, and romance, Rory will learn the truth about the secret ghost police of London and discover her own shocking abilities.

I have to mention the fact that I picked this book up not because of the mention of "ghost" but for the mention of "Jack the Ripper."  This book felt like a mix of everything I like in a book:  historical aspects, paranormal parts, a little romance, and an awesome location.  And let me tell you, I loved this book!!

Following Rory as she learns more about London's experience with Jack the Ripper.  And following the story as it unwinds not knowing what's going on either.  It was great.  This is the first year I have really picked up a lot of ghost-themed books and truly enjoyed them.

This book was set for a good and solid ending.  And then it ended with a slight twist opening it up for a series.  My only hope for the next book is it includes a nice historical aspect like this one.  I would recommend this book to all paranormal fans.
