Wake by Lisa McMann

Genre:  YA Paranormal Fantasy
Wake Trilogy, Book 1

Description (taken from Lisa McMann's website):
For seventeen-year-old Janie, getting sucked into other people's dreams is getting old. Especially the falling dreams, the naked-but-nobody-notices dreams, and the sex-crazed dreams. Janie's seen enough fantasy booty to last her a lifetime.

She can't tell anybody about what she does -- they'd never believe her, or worse, they'd think she's a freak. So Janie lives on the fringe, cursed with an ability she doesn't want and can't control.

Then she falls into a gruesome nightmare, one that chills her to the bone. For the first time, Janie is more than a witness to someone else's twisted psyche. She is a participant....

The synopsis definitely intrigued me, but I have to say this book fell flat for me.  The writing style was way too choppy, and I think it would have been better if it was written in the first person.  The plot seemed to jump from one moment to the next without forming coherent thoughts and explaining things well.  I was left more confused and in the dark while the story went on without me.

However, the story line does get better once you're about halfway in the book when Janie starts talking to Caleb. The dialogue seemed to keep the story going.  Is it enough to continue the series?  No, it isn't.

  1. I've almost picked this book up a few times but now I'm glad I didn't. I didn't hear good things about the second book either.

    Nice review!

  2. There are some people who like the series. But this a definite pick-it-up-at-the-library book before buying.
